A Cinematic Gem. The Woman King is a magnificent historical epic that really brings to life the powerful kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood has crafted a big, flexing, show-off spectacle of a movie that dazzles both visually and emotionally.

The action sequences are muscularly choreographed and the cinematography sweeps across the vast African landscape with sweeping grandeur. At its core, the story focuses on John Boyega as the King of Dahomey who is protected by an all-woman army – The Agojie – led by Viola Davis’ character General Nanisca. This formidable woman must protect her king and his considerable fortune from any threats that come their way. With her are some of her most loyal comrades such as Amenza (Sheila Atim) who possesses lithe grace and deadly javelin skills along with Izogie (Lashana Lynch) who mentors one of the newest recruits to The Agojie, Nawi (Thuso Mbedu).

Together they make up an incredible ensemble cast that bring this story to life with emotional intensity and captivating performances. It’s not just about power or battle though; there is so much emotion between these characters and we see them bond over mutual respect in times of crisis and danger. There are also plenty of moments of joyous celebration during festivals or special occasions which gives us a sense of humanity within what could have been an overly masculine setting for a war film.

Overall, The Woman King is an impressive piece of cinema that does justice to its source material while providing viewers with an extraordinary blend of action-packed excitement, emotional drama, historical accuracy, and awe-inspiring visuals fit for an epic adventure like this one. Fans of period dramas will not want to miss it!
